With the destruction left in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, many are rallying to assist those who have been impacted. AdoptAClassroom.org, one of BoardShare's amazing partners, has been a critical organization for helping educators in many of the impacted areas. What is AdoptAClassroom.org, and how can you help with their hurricane relief efforts?
James Rosenberg was working as an attorney when he began mentoring a student at a school for children who had physical and mental delays. Surprised by both the lack of resources in schools and the amount that teachers spend out of pocket for supplies, Rosenberg decided to help. He quit his job in 1988 to live out his mission of assisting teachers. Thus, AdoptAClassroom.org was built.
It is no secret that educators spend a great deal of their own money on classroom supplies; on average, teachers spend $600 of their own money each year to equip their classrooms -- 20% of teachers spend more than $1000 annually. An award-winning 501(c)(3), AdoptAClassroom.org makes it easy for individual donors and corporate sponsors to donate funds to K-12 classrooms in public, private and charter schools throughout the U.S.
Donors select a classroom based on teacher name, geography, or other criteria. If a specific classroom is not specified, donations will go to an underserved class in the community. Donations are given to the teacher in forms of online credit, which they can use to shop online through AdoptAClassroom.org and purchase items from the organization's various partners. Each donor is set an "Impact Report" which details what the teacher purchased with the donation. In addition to educational technology companies like BoardShare, AdoptAClassroom.org is also partnered with companies that offer educational games, musical instruments, furniture, and more.
As of February 2012, AdoptAClassroom.org has raised over $18 million from individuals and businesses to support underfunded classrooms, reaching over 4.3 million children. Over 146,000 classrooms are registered, representing all 50 states and U.S. territories. Recently, the organization has been making a tremendous impact in raising money for hurricane relief. Visit AdoptAClassroom.org's Hurricane Relief Efforts page to help classrooms in need. You can become a fundraiser individually, or start a team to raise money. You can also donate money to the organization, or donate to a specified fundraising team or individual.
Donations are not limited to Hurricane relief. You can donate throughout the school year by visiting AdoptAClassroom.org and selecting "Find a Classroom". If you're interested in raising money for your classroom, visit AdoptAClassroom.org's website and select "Register a Classroom."
